If you have it or know someone who does, what is your experience with it? What do you know about it? Does it ever get better? I can't take SSRIs, by the way.

Are we doomed to try to fight this off forever? What helped you?

I am constantly unhappy and there usually isn't much of a reason. I am losing faith in my ability to keep trying and trying when it doesn't get me anywhere.

Update:

thank you for your answer, but I hate seeing Dysthymia constantly referred to as "mild" when you are constantly unhappy. You are flat--nothing has the luster in life that a healthy person has. Having so little joy affects your will to continue on.

Update 3:

I do know why it is called mild, and I suppose it is when compared to major depression & major depressive episodes, though to me the word just doesn't seem to fit with the disorder.

I have this and I must say the important thing is to stay off any kinds of medication, which seem to work at first but then side effects like obesity and antisocial behavior lead to low self esteem making it worse.

Your hormones or diet might be out of balance - some foods can cause lethargy or depression, while others can do the opposite. My advice from personal experience is

1. build a very strong social network and hang out with lots of different people you enjoy spending time with

2. participate in social activities like sports, group movies, or games

3. yoga or martial arts to help develop confidence and energy

4. distracting projects, like building a bird feeder, scrap booking, sewing, or remodeling

5. school or if you have a job, take some of those 0 credit courses or part time enrollment

6. go out with friends for lunch or dessert

7. chocolate

If you can't take SSRI's then go to counseling. That and the usual methods like excercise. Go to group support meetings or another forum. Pyscology and Pschiatry both together are your answer. SSRIs are not the only form of treatment.

Dysthymia is nothing more than mild depression. Exercising, eating right, and having a good social support system will be key to getting through it.
