So i've noticed that my mare has really dry, flaky skin in her armpit area (i guess that is what you would call it). I tried putting mtg on it and it just made it worse. it doesn't appear to be a fungus or anything like that so i'm assuming its just dry skin. anybody know of anything i can put on it to make it better?

Have you tried plain vaseline petroleum jelly? I would try it. Some horses have a reaction to mtg, but vaseline will not produce a reaction, and it will prevent chafing and help to restore the skin. If you massage it in, it improves circulation which also helps to restore and maintain the skin integrity.

There was an article about this in EQUUS magazine. My mare and another horse I ride have it too. It's very common. What happens is when a horse lays down the heel of their hoof presses into this area temporarily cutting off circulation and this prevents any nutrients from getting to the area and keeping the skin soft. So with limited nutrients the skin gets dry and flaky. As of now just curry the area and keep it looking as nice as possible but there isn't much you can do. If this gets worse then you are risking your horse getting a capped elbow which is nothing that big of a deal but your horse will have to wear a shoe boil boot if this develops into a capped elbow. But as of now don't worry too much about it.
