As far as I am aware, you can play backward compatible psp games on your PS Vita. I think you would have to download the titles through the internet software that the PS Vita uses as the PS Vita may not support the UMD back disc cover. And let's face it, most of the current games consoles have backward compatibilites to their previous games consoles over the past history. PS2 > PS1. PS3 > PS2 > PS1 (in the fat model). Xbox 360 > Xbox (some cases). For this generation, the new Wii U which is coming out this holiday season (2012) should be backward compatible to our Wii games that we already own.

downloaded games should be fine but psp vita cant play umd's for some stupid reason.

Q: Is PS Vita compatible with other PlayStation platform games like PS3, PS2, or PSP? Do you have any plan to support other PlayStation platforms in the future?

A: Users can play supported digital PSP titles and supported minis. In regard to PSone classics titles, we will announce further details when they are ready. PlayStation does not have plans to make PS Vita compatible with PS3 or PS2 titles at this point.
